On-the-job English

How often do you use English at work?
What are your English goals for the future?
Do you need or want to reach these goals?

Think about your needs and goals as you answer the questions below. Use always, sometimes, never to clarify needs and need or want to set goals.

Example:
1. I have to give instructions at work.
Need: sometimes (I give instructions at work, but only sometimes.)
Goal: need (Knowing English well enough to give instructions is something I need.)

2. I have to report problems on the job.
Need: never (I never have to do this.) BUT
Goal: want (I want to know English well enough to do this. Maybe if I knew English well enough I would always report problems and make my work safer.)

Now you try with the following sentences:
I have to discuss my job with supervisors.
I have to discuss my job with co-workers.
I have to express my opinion.
I have to use safety equipment.
I have to explain how safety equipment works.
I have to participate in meetings.
I have to understand announcements.
I have to give and take messages.
